Hurricane Season and More.

On August 8, 2011, in Resources, by

The forecast for 2011 is picking up a few more names with an issue from the NOAA on an expanded Atlantic hurricanes list.  According to Garry Bell, Ph.D, the conditions for hurricane activity is ripe for a busy season from August through October.

The conditions for a active season has increased from 65 percent to 85 percent in May and now continues with an expected increase in the number of storms.  Hurricane season began on June 1st and ends November 30th, and there is a 70 percent probability, a total of:

  • “14 to 19 named storms (top winds of 39 mph or higher), including:
  • 7 to 10 hurricanes (top winds of 74 mph or higher), of which:
  • 3 to 5 could be major hurricanes (Category 3, 4 or 5; winds of at least 111 mph)” (www.noaa.gov)

Currently we are up to five: Arlene, Bret, Cindy, Don and Emily.  Preparations for this season can be found here and also several links listed below.

White House shares thoughts on Earthquakes.

Food Integrity Now featured an article listed below, please read and comment! The large number of fish affected by the environmental changes is alarming to biologists and oceanographers because of the vast number all at once.

A day at the beach building sandcastles on the shoreline is a fun way to learn about the ebb and tide of a changing world. Building a sandcastle is fun and entertaining, but nevertheless futile because everyone knows it’s only a day thing. The picture that comes to mind is the thought of digging sand on the edge of the shoreline where the romance of land and water takes place. Trying to capture this drama is much like trying to domesticate the stock market or build a snowman in the middle of summer. The price of oil is rising and it is quite trivial for some, but for others its a walk in the park with Charlie Sheen. Let’s dive in and see what’s driving the world ATM and why the Tin Can Man is worth more than the past decades.

National Inflation Association

“The National Inflation Association is an organization that is dedicated to preparing Americans for hyperinflation and helping Americans not only survive, but prosper in the upcoming hyperinflationary crisis.

The United States now has over $76 trillion in total debt obligations. Our budget deficit in February of 2011 alone was a record $222.5 billion, more than the entire year of 2007. Although our 2010 cash budget deficit was $1.3 trillion, once you factor in changes in our unfunded liabilities for Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid, our real budget deficit for the year actually surpassed $5 trillion.

NIA believes that not only will it be impossible for the U.S. to ever pay off its national debt, but it will be impossible for the U.S. to ever balance its budget again. Even by the White House’s own projections, the U.S. budget deficit in 2011 will be 43% of total government expenditures. This level of deficit as a percentage of total expenditures is about equal to what most countries have experienced right before reaching an outbreak of hyperinflation.”

WHO Radiation FAQs

On April 21, 2011, in Environmental, by

There are many concerns about food safety, and planning ahead is possible with the right information and resources. The World Health Organization, or WHO, shares GL’s guideline levels of risks and safety standards. WHO is an organization that does provide basic information about the concerns of radiation and food safety; however, independent resources is preferred for making your own local analysis.

Here are a few FAQs

“Can food produced in other countries be affected by the events in Japan?

Radioactive material has been released into the environment from damaged Japanese nuclear power plants. Radiation levels measured to date in other countries are far below the level of background radiation that most people are exposed to in every day circumstances and do not present health or transportation safety hazards, according to the United Nations organizations closely monitoring the situation.
Minute amounts of radioactive caesium and iodine might be found using very sensitive detection methods but this should not affect foods produced in other countries as the amounts involved will be well below acceptable levels and would not pose a health concern to those who eat the food.

What are the potential health effects of consuming contaminated food?

Consuming food contaminated with radioactive material will increase the amount of radioactivity a person is exposed to and could increase the health risks associated with exposure to radiation. The exact effect will depend on which radionuclides have been ingested and the amount. According to data reported so far, radioactive iodine is the main contaminant and concentrations in some food samples have been detected at levels above the Japanese regulatory limits. Radioactive iodine has a half-life of eight days and decays naturally within weeks. If ingested, it can accumulate in the body, particularly the thyroid gland, increasing the risk of thyroid cancer, particularly in children.
The ingestion of potassium iodide is an established method to prevent the accumulation of radioactive iodine in the thyroid.
Radioactive caesium has also been detected in some foods. The situation has to be monitored carefully as ingestion of food contaminated with radioactive caesium can also have long-term health effects.”
